Julian Garvue is a versatile pianist and vocal coach based in Los Angeles. Known for his stylistic range across genres, he will serve on the music staff for LA Opera’s 2026–27 season, working on productions of Candide, Turandot, and Le nozze di Figaro.

From 2024-2026, Julian worked as a Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist at LA Opera, serving as staff for Così fan tutte (Mo. James Conlon), Ainadamar (Mo. Lina Gonzales Granados), West Side Story (Mo. Conlon), Akhnaten (Mo. Dalia Stasevska), and Falstaff (Mo. Conlon). He also worked as prompter for Maestro Conlon’s 20th anniversary Gala. An experienced continuo player, Julian has played harpsichord or fortepiano in several productions, including Rinaldo (West Edge Opera), Le nozze di Figaro (Wolf Trap), and Don Giovanni (Merola Opera Program).

Also at home on the concert stage, Julian made his Concerto debut with the Seattle Collaborative Orchestra under Maestro Sunny Xia in 2025 playing Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, a work he reprised in 2026 with the Saratoga Orchestra under Maestro Anna Edwards. In 2018, Julian premiered his own prizewinning composition Piano Concertino also with the Seattle Collaborative Orchestra. This work integrated elements of classical and jazz together and was inspired by the music of Thelonious Monk.

As an educator and vocal coach, Julian serves as head coach for the Castleton Vocal Immersion Program alongside Michelle DeYoung, Paul Groves, and Dietlinde Turban Maazel. He has spent summers as a vocal piano fellow at Wolf Trap, the Merola Opera Program - where he won the prestigious Schwabacher Debut Recital audition alongside tenor Michael Butler - and the Music Academy of the West.

A musician of expansive creative interests, Julian spent three years embedded in the New York City music scene as a freelance jazz pianist, ballet pianist, and educator. He served in the Harmony program directing a small choir in the Bronx, and from 2017-2018 served as an ArtistYear Americorps Fellow in Queens. His recording credits outside classical music include albums with jazz collective The Arsonists, and an avant-garde free jazz release, Doublefist, alongside his contemporaries from the Eastman School of Music.

Julian graduated with his MM and Performer’s Certificate from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where he studied with Kevin Murphy and Anne Epperson. He received his undergraduate from the Eastman School of Music as a double major in Jazz Piano and Music Theory.
